Behind the Ostrich: the loneliest caper
By Emily Stidsen

Behind the Ostrich the jellybeans lie--
shining the moon in the peppermint sky
as the birds in the cars flutter by on a breeze
and the wings of the butterflies flap past the trees
"It is too late" they said when the iv'ry moon sunk
past the columns of amber and rows of spelunk
"It is this that we know and it's this that we see
and it's far too late for an ebony tea.
Violet is rising, of that we are sure,
but none of us know of a plausible cure."
So the doctors and damsels and dresses alike
all went into the mountains and went for a hike
while the flowers of diamonds and harlequin weeds
danced out through the marshes and played in the reeds.

Forgiveness
By Emily Stidsen

I’m filled with whipped marshmallow
instead of lead
Breathing helium
instead of anger
Taking a pinch of forgiveness with my coffee
instead of the same old stale resentment.
Floating freely in zero gravity
with nothing left to weigh me down.

The bittersweet is gone
with the frigid cold
The glaring gives way
to the laughter of old
And somewhere inside
There’s a strange sort of charm
that despite being caused unendurable harm
despite the dumb things I tried
and how often we cried,
even after all this
you’ll still stand by my side.
